Candy is a charter member of Southern Delaware Toastmasters. Her role as VP of Education, helping members set their educational goals, has inspired her to reach some goals of her own: She has recently earned her CC and CL and is one speech shy of completing her first two Advanced Communication manuals. Although Candy had been speaking for more than two decades before joining Toastmasters, she has never been truly comfortable in front of an audience until now. "For some people, public speaking comes naturally," she says. "For others like me, it takes a ton of practice, and that's just what Toastmasters provides. Now, speaking is not something I do--it's part of who I am!"
Candy was instrumental in helping Southern Delaware Toastmasters relocate to Delaware Technical & Community College, where she retired in 2001 from her 28-year position as executive secretary to the Campus Director. She is now spearheading a DTCC/Toastmasters connection for students, staff, and alumni and says that being back on campus is like coming home.
As managing partner of Fruitbearer Publishing, LLC, founder and director of Delmarva Christian Writers' Fellowship, and deacon & elder with Georgetown Presbyterian Church, Candy's leadership skills are being refined through the Toastmasters experience.
While she enjoys writing, reading, and directing inspirational women's conferences, her favorite hours are spent with her husband Drew, their three children, four grandchildren, and their Cocker Spaniel, Buttercup. |
